The Event

The Trois Etapes is the ultimate competitive pro-am cycling experience. The event is designed to give riders the chance to experience team cycling under race conditions, with the full support that a pro would have in a Grand Tour. The event is designed to incentivise tactical team riding. Each team of 8 riders (7 amateurs and 1 pro) has its own team car and Directeur Sportif. Every rider has a radio link with their team car and the Race Director.

Q: What if I am meeting a Cosaveli transfer from Geneva to Race HQ in Orelle?

Bike Preparation

Q: Do I need to service my bike prior to the event?

A: Yes. This is mandatory and we will be asking for evidence that your bike has been correctly serviced and equipped for Alpine riding prior to the event. Such preparations include a full service by a qualified mechanic, the fitting of appropriate tyres, brake pads for your chosen wheel type, rear cassette etc..

Q: Do you recommend anyone for bike servicing?

A: Yes. We highly recommend the following three worldwide servicing partners:
- UK: Bespoke Cycling in London www.bespokecycling.com
- US West Coast: Studio Velo in San Francisco www.studiovelocycling.com
- Northern Europe: La Bici in Dusseldorf www.labici.de

Q: What happens if I have not managed to get my bike serviced prior to arriving at the Trois Etapes?

A: Bespoke Cycling will be providing tech support at the event. This WILL NOT extend to any bikes that arrive at the event in an inappropriate condition. Bespoke Cycling will, at their own discretion, service your bike on site but this will be subject to their fees at the time.

Q: What gear ratios would you advise?

A: In 2012 all riders (pro and amateur) used a 28 on the rear cassette. Some riders rode with a normal drive (eg 53-39) on the front and others with a compact crankset (eg 50-34). But in all cases riders had a 28 on the rear. SRAM now produce a rear cassette up to 32 teeth in all their ranges.

Mechanical Support

Q: Will there be mechanical support at the event?

A: Yes, this will be provided by Bespoke Cycling.

Q: What will this cover?

A: All labour will be provided free of charge (as long as your bike has been appropriately serviced and equipped prior to the Trois Etapes). Teams

Q: How many riders are there in a team?

A: There are eight riders on each team: seven amateurs and one pro.

Q: What happens if I can’t keep up with my team?

A: The whole event is structured to support riders of varying abilities. The race rules will ensure that everyone’s efforts are enfranchised in the team’s final results. All riders will have the option to join an advance grupetto should they wish to do so. This would mean they are ahead of the main peloton for much of the Stage rather than falling behind.

Team Support Cars

Q: Does each team have it’s own support car?

A: Yes.

Q: Who is in the car?

A: A driver, a representative from your team’s charity and possibly a representative from your team’s lead sponsor.

Q: What extra equipment is available in the car?

A: Drinks, water, nutrition, your spare clothing, inner tubes, track pumps, medical and emergency kits, a spare bike (supplied by sponsor Cervelo), some spare wheels.

Trois Etapes 2013 Launch Party

The Trois Etapes 2013 launch party was a phenomenal success. Cosaveli were delighted to be joined by Ed Clancy MBE, his three Olympic medals and Tour de France winner, Carlos Sastre.

The event was held at global law firm, Reed Smith LLP's, London headquarters on the 33rd floor of Broadgate Tower. Attended by over 160 supporters from the world of sport, media, business and finance, Cosaveli not only officially launched the 2013 edition of the event, but also revealed plans for a 2014 Trois Etapes Giro event in the Dolomites and an expanded 2014 version of the event in France. The news heralds the creation of a global Pro-Am Race Series.

"I feel happy to be back for the second year, for me it’s beautiful to be here again and this is a magnificent place to be. Last year was fantastic and I think it’s a great event,” said Carlos Sastre. He continued: "It’s a huge motivation to ride, a lot of money being raised for charity which is even more motivation for me. That’s money for the projects and it means a lot for those that really need it."

Looking around the room it was a 'Who's Who' of the City and it didn't go un-noticed by Ed Clancy MBE, "This is perhaps the nicest building I’ve ever been in; it’s certainly the nicest lift I’ve been in to get here! I think it just shows that cycling is popular with everyone at the moment, from all areas of life, and the fact that the people here are willing to put a bit back is cracking." Adding glitz and glamour to the evening, TV's Zoe Hardman and Amy Guy were sporting the Cosaveli kit at Tuesday's launch. Songezo Jim to ride in the Milan San Remo on Sunday

Back in 2008, Team CSC had an ongoing relationship with a South African charity called Velokhaya. Velokhaya had a bike club that kids from the townships could go to. Over the years Team CSC donated bikes, clothing and spare parts to help the club run. But it was and still is far more than just a bike club. Velokhaya gives disadvantaged young people from townships hope. Hope that through hard work and dedication they can make something more of their lives.

In July 2008 CSC paid for a group of the hardest working kids to travel to Europe and experience the Tour de France first hand. One of the young people who was invited on that trip was Songezo Jim. Richard Gorman remembers the day well, "We all shouted and screamed together as Carlos Sastre stormed up Alp d'Huez and took hold of the leaders yellow jersey."

Five years on and Songezo Jim is a true example of what hardwork, commitment and giving someone that 'one chance' can do to change their life.

On Sunday, Songezo will be racing in The Milan San Remo, La Classica di Primavera for Team MTN Qhubeka, the first African team to enter a UCI World Tour event. From everyone at Cosaveli, Buona Fortuna Songezo!

600k raised with 5 months to go

Only 3 months since we announced the full Trois Etapes roster and our fantastic riders and charities have already raised a combined total of $600,000. This is an astonishing figure when we still have 5 months to go until the event itself.

Niels Bryan-Low, CEO of Cosaveli said this about the achievement, "Our goal is to generate unparalleled revenues for our charity partners. We achieve this by creating the ultimate cycling experience for our riders, and by delivering significant and sustainable value for corporate partners. The fact that we've already helped generate $600,000 for our wonderful charities five months before the Trois Etapes 2013 edition is a real testament to the incredible efforts of everyone involved in the event. This brings the total raised for charity in just the last 15 months to over $2.3m."

The seven charity partners of the 2012 edition raised just over $1.7m from the inaugural event held in the French Alps. This year's event sees 10 charities represented from all over the world.

Rainbow Jersey to ride at the Trois Etapes

When Colin Lynch was 16 years old he broke his foot playing rugby and suffered minor spinal cord damage. After several years of operations and multiple bouts with infection, doctors finally had to amputate the leg below the knee.

Colin took up Paralympic cycling 3 years ago and is currently the reigning UCI Paracycling Time Trial World Champion and the World Individual Pursuit Champion on the track.

"Doing the Trois Etapes is an opportunity for me to showcase my time-trialling abilities in the Prologue and I'm looking forward to helping change people's perceptions when they see a rider with a carbon leg riding up the side of some pretty steep mountains! Following on from last year's London Paralympics, this event is a great opportunity to showcase Paracycling to a wide audience, especially with the TV coverage from Channel 4 and Eurosport. I'm looking forward to helping my team in any way I can!"

We are delighted to announce that Colin will be riding for The Anne Frank Trust UK at the Trois Etapes in July.

Garmin Sharp rider Andreas Klier to ride the Trois Etapes

We are delighted to announce that Garmin-Sharp professional cyclist, Andreas Klier, will be riding at the 2013 Trois Etapes in July. Vuelta stage winner and Classic specialist, Andreas will be leading the Prostate Cancer UK team this summer.

"It's a well known joke within the peloton that I'm a bad climber but I'm actually really looking forward to this great event! The Trois Etapes will make us all ride as fast as we can, together, as a team, for one great goal - to raise as much money as possible for charity.

I am sure that all participants will not only be looking for a team victory, but will know that with every single kilometer that we suffer in the mountainous climbs of the Tour de France we are doing something good. I hope that the event will be as successful as last year for everyone involved. I wish everybody riding...Good Luck."
Andreas Klier - Garmin-Sharp

Renowned for his cycling anecdotes and great nature we are thoroughly looking forward to seeing Andreas put his team through their paces on the climbs.

More TE2013 Pros Announced...

We are delighted to announce the latest in our wonderful lineup of pros at the Trois Etapes 2013. The following great riders will be joining Carlos Sastre, Colin Lynch (World Paralympic TT Champion), Evie Stevens (World TTT Champion) & Songezo Jim (MTN Qhubeka) at the event in July:

Daniel Lloyd – formerly Garmin Cervelo, Cervelo Test Team and more recently Team IG Sigma Sport will be leading Shooting Star CHASE for the Trois Etapes 2013. A former Grand Tour rider and now the face of YouTube channel, the Global Cycling Network, ‘Lloydy’ will be a great asset to our pro roster.

Mark Beaumont – record-breaking long-distance British cyclist, adventurer, broadcaster, documentary maker and author. Mark returns to the event as Walking With the Wounded’s Pro but has many expeditions between then and now. Good luck from everyone at Cosaveli!

Mark Beaumont said: "I absolutely loved the whole experience of the Trois Etapes in 2012 and so am looking forwards to another chance to lead the LDC Walking With The Wounded team. Coming from an ultra endurance and mainly solo expedition cycling background, it was a very new challenge to work with a team and push our limits on the mega climbs of the TdF. I felt very privileged to lead such an inspiring group of ex-soldiers who are all recovering from serious injuries. The money raised has helped fund their continued rehabilitation and that of their comrades. And just as significantly, the achievement of these men, pushing their limits during the Trois Etapes is a huge inspiration to other wounded personnel to show what is possible, even after serious injury. For me, this years training has started well with a 600 mile ride down Malaysia, some winter training in Dubai and next month an expedition across the North Patagonian icecap. Come July and the Walking with the Wounded Team will be back, even stronger and more motivated for a big result in the 2013 Trois Etapes.

Official Launch Video for the Walking With The Wounded Trois Etapes Cycle Team

The Walking With The Wounded Trois Etapes Cycle Team was unveiled by team captain and world record-breaking cyclist, Mark Beamont, at London’s Imperial War Museum and we spoke to the team members about their view of the race and why they wanted to be involved with Walking With The Wounded.

Edward Parker, Co-Founder of Walking With The Wounded, said that the charity is “hugely grateful to men like those who are heading to France to take on the Alps. We need people like that to highlight what a good cause this is – we are also hugely thankful to all those who donate, whether it be a few pounds or a few thousand pounds. All contributions are warmly received and really do go to make a difference, as you can hear when the wounded Trois Etapes Team members mention with regards to their rehab..

The team will head to France this weekend to take on the formidable French Alps, so keep up-to-date with their news via this website.

Teammates Ride to Make a Difference in 2012 Trois Etapes

World Bicycle Relief is extremely excited to announce its selection for participation in the 2012 Trois Etapes - a televised 3-day pro/am fundraising ride in the French Alps.

Right on the heels of the Tour de France, the 2012 Trois Etapes pits amateur cycling teams against one another in classic Tour de France Alpine climbs including Galibier, Alpe D’Huez, Glandon, Croix de Fer, and Madeleine all in the name of a good cause. Each amateur team is joined by a professional cyclist and a full support crew on the mountain routes.

Team World Bicycle Relief’s innaugural appearance at the Trois Etapes will be led by Team MTN Qhubeka professional cyclist, Songezo Jim. As a member of Team MTN Qhubeka, Songezo Jim is no stranger to raising awareness of mobility issues in rural Africa. In partnership with World Bicycle Relief, Qhubeka projects provide bicycles to children in return for work done to improve their environment and their community. “Qhubeka”, the Nguni word meaning “to carry on”, is an apt name for MTN Qhubeka, Africa’s most winning and largest multi-discipline pro cycle race team.

“Back when I lived in the Eastern Cape, I used to walk to school." says Team MTN Qhubeka member and Team WBR rider Songezo Jim. "I walked for over an hour to get there. I know how it is and how much time it takes, so the World Bicycle Relief/Qhubeka project is something I really love. And it’s not about spoon-feeding people; you have to work to get a bike, which is great. It’s something I never had and I appreciate what they’re doing.”

Rounding out the Team World Bicycle Relief Trois Etape squad are four amazing amateur riders: David Avery, Andrew McPherson, Austen Reid, and Thorsten Willhelms. Each of these skilled riders has committed to fundraising a minimum of 5,000 GBP ($8,000) for World Bicycle Relief with all proceeds going to World Bicycle Relief's education program in rural Africa. A generous donor has also committed to matching the first $20,000 raised through the Team World Bicycle Relief Trois Etape riders!

The Trois Etapes will be led by 2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre and runs from July 29th – July 31st. Trois Etapes Launch

The launch of the Trois Etapes was kindly hosted by international law firm, Reed Smith, at their stunning reception rooms on the 31st floor of London's Broadgate Tower.

Over 120 guests from around the world joined Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre on 30 May 2012. The Trois Etapes will take on some of the toughest climbs of the Tour de France and is the world’s first pro-am cycling event.

Carlos Sastre who won the Tour de France in 2008 took part in an interview with Eurosport TV presenter, Anthony McCrossan discussing Carlos's 2008 victory and his own philanthropic ventures in Spain. Carlos donated a replica of his winning bike which was auctioned off for the charities involved.

Reed Smith are proud sponsors of The dZi foundation, one of the teams of cyclists who are racing in the Trois Etapes in order to raise £1 million for charity. The dZi Foundation is a charity based in Nepal who work tirelessly to provide education, sanitation and stable living environments for remote communities.

Carlos Sastre to Ride Trois Etapes

2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre has announced that he will ride the Trois Etapes. His participation in the event marks a historic cycling moment. It will be the first time since 2008 that Carlos has returned to Alpe D'Huez, the site of his famous stage victory that won him the yellow jersey.

“I’m delighted to be riding the event and I'm excited that Alpe d’Huez is to be one of the iconic climbs in it. The Alpe will always be special place for me as it is where I won the stage and took the yellow jersey on my way to securing victory in the Tour de France.

This will be the very first time I have ridden up Alpe d’Huez since my stage win there in 2008. Re-living some of the great memories of that day, whilst helping to raise £1 million for good causes including my own charity Smilekers will be perfect.”

Introducing Cosaveli Head Chef and Maitre D'

This week we would like to introduce you to Head Chef Johnny Ainsworth and Maitre D’ Chris Donovan who will be in charge of the catering at Trois Etapes 2013. Cosaveli will be flying Johnny, who hand picked his team of chefs, and his catering staff to Race HQ to ensure that all riders, mechanics, crew and VIPs are suitably wined and dined throughout the event.

"We have now visited Race HQ and are very honoured to have the opportunity to cook for such talented athletes, at such an amazing race, that will help so many fantastic charities. We have created a detailed plan of the menu throughout the event to ensure that each meal is full of nutritious and locally sourced produce."

With cycling now deemed 'the new golf' it’s ironic that the first major catering event that Chris worked on was the 1987 Milk Race! Since then, Chris has held illustrious positions, such as Deputy Secretary of the quintessential Sunningdale Golf Club which often plays hosts to the PGA majors, and where they both worked together.

Welcome to the Cosaveli team Chris and Johnny!

Interview with dZi Europe Directeur Sportif Bobby Julich

The dZi Foundation has seen their two teams training in both Tuscany and California. A few months ago we announced cycling legend Bobby Julich (centre of image) as Team dZi Europe’s Directeur Sportif. Bobby has been taking his responsibilities very seriously and we caught up with him to find out how his team are getting on.

How was the dZi Europe training camp?
"I had a great time at our first camp last week in Tuscany! Since January, I have been following these guys via TrainingPeaks software and even though I’d already met some of the people involved, it was nice to put a face and personality to each file that I have been looking at for months."

What did you want to get out of the camp?
"My objective at the camp was to follow the riders during the training and get to know them on a personal basis in order to make more informed decisions in the future regarding training, tactics, and teamwork. Following these guys in the car for hours (I am man enough to admit that I am no longer fit enough to train as long or hard as they are!) gave me all the information that I need to support them in the coming months before the actual event in July. We had some great conversations and bonding off the bike as well due to us all staying in the same place and that was just as valuable, if not more so, for developing team spirit and improving communication."

How will the training camp differ to the actual Trois Etapes event in July?
"The Trois Etapes will be challenging on many levels, but you can never predict how people will react when they are tired, hungry, or nervous until they are put under the stress of those conditions. I believe that we learned a lot about each rider’s strengths, weaknesses, and what it means to be a team due to the workload that these guys are under. Each of them have jobs and other commitments, but they have come together to support and raise money for The dZi Foundation and most importantly have fun. I am very much looking forward to our next camp at the end of May and the actual event in July".

Team dZi USA San Francisco Training Camp with Studio Velo

Team dZi USA opened their team training camp in April with a three day ride down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo. They were backed in the ride by local friends and team sponsors including Studio Velo, Reed Smith LLP and Marmot.

Cosaveli CEO, Niels Bryan-Low, who attended both training camps said: "The team spirit, the grit, the determination, the will to win the Trois Etapes cycling race and the fundraising palmares amongst these riders is quite astounding. These two teams are shaping up to be real contenders. It's been an honour and a privilege to be part of their training schedule. We wish them every success at the Trois Etapes."

The SHINE Trust

SHINE helps support educational initiatives which encourage disadvantaged children and young people to raise their achievement levels in the core academic subjects. SHINE’s programmes have been tackling educational inequality for 12 years. In that time we have developed considerable expertise in the education sector, investing in projects that have given more than 50,000 children and teenagers the opportunities they need to fulfil their academic potential.

Our approach has been endorsed by the LSE, Ofsted, New Philanthropy Capital and the National Foundation for Educational Research. Educational inequality is a matter of social justice. It is not fair that family income or social background should prevent a child achieving their full potential in life. SHINE believes that all children should have the chance to succeed irrespective of their background of their background and family income. Economically disadvantaged children and teenagers should leave school with an equal chance and real choices for access to further education a good job and a rewarding career.

SHINE is led by a longstanding and committed Board of Trustees, chaired by Jim O’Neill, Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management.SHINE is also supported by a number of high profile patrons and business leaders, such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Lord O’Donnell, Sarah Brown, David Beckham, Sushil Wadhwani, Gavyn Davies and Sir Peter Ogden.

1001 Fontaines

There are 900 million people worldwide living in rural areas who don't have access to a safe source of drinking water. This has a dramatic impact on their health as water borne diseases kill 10,000 people every day - mainly children.

The mission of 1001 fontaines is to improve the health in these rural populations in a sustainable way by enabling them to produce and drink safe water every day. This is achieved through an entrepreneurial model whereby small water treatment facilities are implemented in rural villages and entrusted to a local operator in charge of producing and selling the water at an affordable price. This ensures the communities’ autonomy as well as the sustainability of the project.

Achievements and perspectives

1001 Fontaines' is strongly influenced by the business world's best practices, having two former Accenture partners as MD and President. As of December 2012, 120,000 people benefit from safe drinking water every day in Cambodia and Madagascar though the work of 120 local operators. Pilot sites have just been launched in India, becoming the third country where the 1001 Fontaines model is being implemented. In these countries, 1001 fontaines is supported by other charities such as Oxfam or UNICEF and sponsors such as Danone, Veolia and Accenture.

Encouraged by the positive impact of the project in the field and its efficiency, the organisation aims to grow from 120,000 beneficiaries to 1 million! To achieve this goal, 1001 fontaines needs to raise €5 million over the next few years.

How the Trois Etapes will help us expand our project!

We are thrilled to be participating in the Trois Etapes for the first time, and hope that the event will be an amazing way to raise both funds and awareness on the issue of access to water. Jean-Fabrice Mathieu, one of the 1001 fontaines’ Board Members will be leading the team in a year that will see him and team member Emmanuel Henrion compete in Ironman Nice on 23 June. They will be getting tips from Christophe Lemery and Xavier Azalbert who are returning to the Trois Etapes for the second year. Not long after last year's Trois Etapes, Christophe went on to an age-group podium in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, so Trois Etapes seems to bring success not only to the charities but also to the athletes taking part in the race!

Our project is very challenging and our vision is ambitious. We believe that the 1001 fontaines shares a lot of the 'Trois Etapes' spirit and we hope that the synergy between the two will help us raise funds to improve access to water where it is needed most. We look forward to engaging in conversations with people and organisations who would wish to support the project and to the event of course!

The Anne Frank Trust

In 1990 family and friends of Otto Frank set up the Anne Frank Trust to fulfil his wish to see an educational charity in the UK in his daughter's name. The charity draws on the power of Anne Frank’s life and diary to challenge prejudice, encouraging young people to embrace positive attitudes and respect for others.

Why Our Work is Needed

Our work educates both young and old about the damage and suffering caused by prejudice and hatred. We all have a part to play in taking a stand against it. The impact of our work is significant and far reaching, but unfortunately the need for it does not diminish:

  • 47% of Britons see Muslims as a threat
  • 43,748 hate crimes were recorded in 2011/2012
  • 82% of these were race hate crimes and
  • 4% religious hate crimes

Where We Work

Our teams deliver education and exhibition programmes in schools, criminal justice institutions and in local communities. Working across six regions of the UK, we target areas of multiple deprivation with high community tensions.

What We Do

In schools

School children visit our Anne Frank exhibition and participate in workshops exploring issues such as identity and diversity. Small groups of pupils are trained as exhibition guides, who take their peers, school teachers and visitors around the exhibition. Guides then have the opportunity to become Anne Frank Ambassadors. The Ambassadors Programme creates even more engaged, educated, pro-active young people whose learning and development is deepened through guiding at our flagship public exhibitions or running workshops on prejudice in schools.

In prisons

Our programme combines an exhibition and talk by a Holocaust survivor with workshops. In each prison that we work, around 10 participants are trained as guides, showing other prisoners and staff around the exhibition. For many of these guides, this is the first time they will have taken on the role of public speaker or informal educator.

In communities

Our flagship Anne Frank and You travelling exhibition builds upon our work in local schools, taking these messages to the rest of the community in which we are working. These community activities teach about Anne Frank’s life and diary and their relevance to local and social issues today.

We are so delighted to be part of the Trois Etapes for the first time. We applaud the grit and commitment of all our riders and look forward to our young beneficiaries receiving the rewards of their endurance.

Right To Play return with two teams for Trois Etapes 2013

Right To Play is delighted to be involved in the Trois Etapes for the second year running and are looking forward to building on their success as winners of the event last year with the help of long standing supporters and two strong teams in 2013.

Right To Play programmes harness the unique power of sport and play to empower and educate children facing adversity across the world. Through sports and games, local coaches trained by Right To Play help over 800,000 children and young people in 20 countries build essential life skills and better futures, driving lasting social change. Right To Play Athlete Ambassador Mark Cavendish can be seen here visiting Right To Play programmes in Tanzania.

Right To Play’s roots are in the Olympic movement, and they are delighted to confirm that Olympic Rowing Champion Sophie Hosking will be riding for the charity this year. Having memorably won Gold in the lightweight double skulls in July, Sophie will commemorate one year on from this remarkable achievement by joining us on the road and embarking on a challenge of a very different sort!

With support from Sophie and other members of the team, Right To Play is looking forward to raising valuable funds and awareness through the Trois Etapes in support of their programmes across the world.

The Power of Donation Matching

This month saw a hugely generous donation from a Trois Etapes rider to World Bicycle Relief that clearly shows the power of donation matching and demonstrates in numbers the charity's Power of Bicycles message.

$134 will put a bicycle in the hands of someone who needs it - providing independence, a way of getting to school or even a livelihood. On learning that World Bicycle Relief had a donation matching programme, the generous Trois Etapes rider donated the equivalent of 590 bicycles. This got instantly matched to release 1,080 bicycle to Africa. With marginal tax rates in the UK at 50%, the real cost to the donor is less than 300 bikes, yet over 1,000 lives will be radically transformed.

Matching your £ and $:

  • Companies often have donation matching schemes for employees who are taking part in the Trois Etapes;
  • Some companies will match sponsorship funds donated by personal supporters of our incredible riders;
  • Major supporters of a charity can set up a matching programme to help incentivise others to give to a cause;
  • Many governments offer tax rebates on philanthropy. Don't forget, in the UK charities can not only claim 25% Gift Aid on eligible donations but the donor can sometimes claim and gift the marginal tax all the way up to the 50% rate

If you have any questions about how you can support any of our charity partners by donating through or setting up a matching scheme, please do get in touch with us. We'd be delighted to introduce you to any of our charity partners.

Walking With the Wounded

Walking With The Wounded was established to fund the re-training of wounded servicemen and women and in so doing assist them in acquiring the skills and qualifications necessary, to find new careers outside the military. Funds are distributed through their own First Steps Bursary Scheme as well as via organisations and projects; such as The Warrior Programme and Poppy Factory, which re-train and empower ex-servicemen and women.

Walking With the Wounded’s focus is on supporting a career transition, from the Armed Forces to the civilian workplace. Employment through re-training is the key outcome, although raising awareness of the wounded is a core component.

WWTW does not just focus on the Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) leaving the Armed Forces today, but Veterans as well and they recognise both physical as well as cognitive injuries such as Post Trumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Mark Beaumont – record-breaking long-distance British cyclist, adventurer, broadcaster, documentary maker and author said: "I absolutely loved the whole experience of the Trois Etapes in 2012 and so am looking forwards to another chance to lead the LDC Walking With The Wounded team. Come July and the Walking with the Wounded Team will be back, even stronger and more motivated for a big result in the 2013 Trois Etapes."

Walking With the Wounded founder, Ed Parker says: "The Trois Etapes is a wonderful event not only for fundraising but also raising awareness for our Wounded Soldiers. In 2012 the WWTW Trois Etapes team contained not only fundraisers but also 3 wounded soldiers, one of whom was a leg amputee."

Shooting Star CHASE

Shooting Star CHASE is a children’s hospice charity that supports families with children and teenagers with life-limiting conditions. Caring for a child 24/7 can be devastating for families and at Shooting Star CHASE the expert paediatric palliative care makes such a difference to their quality of life.

This year is Shooting Star CHASE’s first foray in the Trois Etapes and the team is captained by Julian Miall. Julian’s family is supported by the charity and he is, therefore, determined more than anyone to complete this challenge and make a significant contribution towards the £8.5 million that is required to provide this vital care to over 600 families every year.

World Bicycle Relief and the Power of Bicycles

World Bicycle Relief is a global nonprofit organisation transforming individuals and communities through The Power of Bicycles. Since 2005, World Bicycle Relief has trained more than 800 field mechanics and provided more than 125,000 specially designed, locally assembled bicycles to disaster survivors, healthcare workers, students and entrepreneurs.

Compared to walking, bicycles represent an enormous leap in productivity and access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities. The simple, sustainable nature of bicycles empowers individuals, their families and their communities.

To accomplish our mission we:

  • DESIGN, SOURCE & MANUFACTURE rugged bicycles engineered specifically for rural African terrain and load requirements
  • ASSEMBLE bicycles locally with proper tools and close attention to quality
  • DELIVER bicycles through Work-to-Own & Study-to-Own programs
  • ESTABLISH maintenance infrastructure by training local field mechanics
  • EVALUATE our work through independent studies
  • COMMUNICATE program results to donors and partners

In their second year as Trois Etape participants, World Bicycle Relief looks to bring passionate athletes together to use their love of sport for good while empowering those in rural Africa with reliable and sustainable transportation.

PCUK Helping more men survive Prostate Cancer

At Prostate Cancer UK, we fight to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life. The truth is, prostate cancer is as big an issue for men as breast cancer is for women. It kills 40,000 men in the UK every year. But research is badly underfunded; tests are unreliable; and treatments can cause incontinence and problems having sex.

We believe men deserve better so we:

  • Support men living with prostate cancer, prostate problems and the effects of treatment
  • Find answers by funding research
  • Lead change by campaigning and collaborating

the impact it has...
We're here for men like John

"When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I heard the specialist say the word 'cancer' and assumed that the end was nigh. It was time to get my house in order, say goodbye to my family and friends. Fortunately, my wife heard the specialist say that there were treatments. However, the only information or help available was a leaflet from the GP, so I contacted Prostate Cancer UK's specialist nurses. They listened, were caring and gave me all the information I needed. They helped me get my head together. I had my treatment and I'm still here smiling. Life is pretty good."

Trois Etapes & Prostate Cancer UK

Last year 5 riders represented Prostate Cancer UK and teamed up with Seth Pelussi their pro. Owen Sharp, CEO of Prostate Cancer UK sees the Trois Etapes as an important platform for the charity: "The Trois Etapes is a unique event, uniting cyclists to push and support one another up the infamous climbs of the Tour de France to give men like John a fighting chance of a better future. The sponsorship raised by our 2013 team will have an immediate impact, supporting our plans for a game-changing investment in prostate cancer research. The spirit and camaraderie of our team in 2012 showed what can be achieved when passionate people join forces behind a vital cause. We’re looking forward to what 2013 will bring."

An Insight into the dZi Foundation

2013 sees a trans-atlantic effort by the dZi teams to support the people and communities of the Himalayas. The dZi Foundation partners with under served communities in remote regions of the Himalaya. dZi’s work builds sustainable locally-driven programs that improve quality of life through advancing education and health, while reducing poverty.

Training is well underway for both dZi Europe and dZi America who are taking the composition of their teams very seriously. In 2012 dZi’s team raised $175,000 when they teamed up with Mark Cavendish’s former teammate at HTC, Craig Lewis. You can follow the teams on their Endless Ascent www.endlessascent.org web site or the work of the charity at www.dzifoundation.org.

President and Co-Founder of dZi Foundation, Jim Nowak is enthusiastic about the team's involvement in the event, "The Trois Etapes 2012 was a brilliant opportunity for the dZi Foundation and we are excited to be back in 2013 to raise funds for our work by riding the iconic stages of the Tour de France. The Trois Etapes gave us a unique platform in Europe, to spread the impact of our work in Nepal, currently serving over 21,000 individuals through our Deep Development model of community, selected, designed and driven programs. We look forward to racing our hearts and our lungs out in the Alps for for the thousands we serve, who live in the throne of the mountain gods, Nepal."

The Pro Team Experience

All teams at the Trois Etapes receive the kind of support usually reserved for Grand Tours: race radios, mechanics, soigneurs, physios, support cars and full team race kit. In order to stand out even more, some teams have already expressed an interest in sourcing some of their own equipment through separate sponsorship deals. These have included agreements with kit manufacturers, the loan of full World Tour spec'd support vehicles or deals with bike manufacturers for team bikes. Whatever your commercial opportunities, the team at event organiser Cosaveli are always on hand to assist you.

If you need us for anything that will help enhance your relationship with your team's corporate supporters and raise more money and awareness for your charity - just get in touch.

Trois Etapes Winter Training Tips

If you live in the mountains it's easy enough to train for an event like the Trois Etapes. But most of us don't. It's generally OK to train for time-trial type racing with nothing more than a diet of long easy aerobic rides interspersed with hard, fast interval session. But that just won't do for mountains (witness how many outstanding time-trial riders experience their "legs falling off" in the Alps during the tour de France.

For mountains the force on the leg muscles is inevitably higher (even with easier gearing) and the force on the calves is usually much higher. The hip adductors get much more stressed and the glutes get used differently.

Tips for those of us that don't live in the mountains:

  • Find some hills and ride up them often
  • The muscle use on a good step machine is very close to the muscle use on a steep bike climb. It helps to keep on the balls of your feet on the steps (ie: heels are in the air) to simulate the stress that you will have on your calves during a climb
  • During climbs your heart rate will go above the aerobic level. It's important to make sure that you are used to it. Make sure this is part of your training schedule.
  • Stretch the calves after each bike ride. This helps prevent the achilles from getting injured. Very important as the achilles will be taking a lot of loading.
  • Mountains put more force on your legs than flat rides, try adding weight training into the mix. A lot of long rides can make you fit but weak. Doing squats once a week (around 8 sets of squats with 12 reps each set) is enough to maintain force.
  • Training volume: steadily increase then ramp up a lot around 6 weeks before the event.
  • One long ride per week (4 to 6 hours) at an easy pace is essential.
  • A weekly leg massage can real help.
  • It's important not to overtrain: "heavy legs" means take a rest day or go very easy. Trying to train hard all the time just leads to burnout.

For an amateur athlete the Trois Etapes is in the "ultra" category and the main aim of an ultra is to finish it. You will want to race but's all a waste of time if you don't finish so here are a few tips:

  • Heat can be a problem. It is hard to prepare for hot conditions but saunas can help.
  • Dehydration occurs before you feel thirst. Drink regularly on the bike and the habit is acquired by regular practise on rides.
  • Sunburn causes huge dehydration - make sure to use an SPF 50 block on arms/face/back of neck.
  • Practise eating on the bike on every training run. You need to find out in advance what food (nutrition bars etc. you can take.). Ignoring this step is asking for trouble. Eat frequently during the ride even if you're not hungry.
  • Get your bike setup fixed properly in advance of the race. Do not change saddle height the night before (it happens amazingly often that amateur riders fiddle with the basic bike settings before a race due to nerves. This is a disaster because you use the muscles differently. Get it right well in advance.
  • Take it easy and stick to sensible heart rate levels. Ignore this and you risk flooding the system with lactates and then failing.
  • Learn to descend properly. Fast descent on a bike is dangerous and you will find that you have very little room for manoeuvre if there is a rock on the road (it happens) so you need constant awareness of the road surface as well as what is going on ahead and around you.

Taking Part

Unique Riding Experience

If you are interested in taking part in the Trois Etapes we would be delighted to hear from you. The Trois Etapes is structured to allow for a range of skill, power and experience levels. The goal of the event is to raise money for charity so keen cyclists of any ability who are passionate about raising money for charity should feel free to get in touch. The Trois Etapes is a rare opportunity for amateur riders to attack some of the most renowned Alpine stages of the Tour de France; to ride with the pros and experience cycling like a pro. The event has been planned and organised by some of the leading lights of the professional cycling world to ensure the highest level of competitive quality and rider safety.

Every detail of the event has been tailored to make this a true pro-team experience:

  • Pro-riders on each team to support riders and advise on tactics
  • Routes include some of the most renowned Alpine tour stages
  • Support vehicles and mechanics
  • Masseurs and physios throughout
  • Team radios: riding competitively as a team – strategy is as important as power
  • Specialist catering both during and after each day’s racing
  • Transport of your bike to and from the event from London
  • Team kit

Fundraising platform for charities worldwide

Charities may enter their own team of riders. Typically the entry fee is paid for by the charity who then use the platform to raise money for their cause. We select those charities who apply based on:

  • our belief in the efficacy and impact of their work; and
  • our belief in their ability to use the Trois Etapes platform to the greatest fundraising effect

We expect charities to be able to leverage their involvement into a > £100k gross return. Last year each charity averaged £110k.

It is possible for a group of riders or a corporate sponsor to enter a team on behalf of a charity. A number of charities have entered in this manner. In this case, the riders or the corporate sponsor pay the entry fee and all revenues raised go to the charity. In either case charities will receive ALL income from the following sources. (Please note, these funds will pass directly to the charities, the Trois Etapes takes no fees, management charges or deductions from any of these revenue sources).

  1. Rider entry fees
Riders gain access to the most exciting pro-am cycling competition ever staged. Charities and rider teams are welcome to make mutual arrangements setting the entry price for teams and/or individual riders.
  2. Individual sponsorship
In addition to their entry fees, riders and charities will work together to raise individual sponsorship donations. These might include rider sponsorship pages on sites like JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving. This might include charities promoting the event to their supporters and donors. Friends, family, work colleagues, suppliers, employers, donors and supporters should all be encouraged to participate, support their team and donate to the cause before, during and after this challenge event.
  3. Corporate sponsorship
Each team will have the right to sell three levels of sponsorship. Team sponsorship packages are valuable both at a marketing level (because the event will be televised) and as a sales opportunity (because sponsors will be granted access to the high caliber rider demographic). Gold Level Team sponsors are exclusive and give the sponsor the right to the team name cobranding. Silver and Bronze Level Team sponsors are non-exclusive: charities may seek a number of Silver and Bronze sponsors whose branding will appear on all team related collateral.

If you represent either a charity or a team of riders and would like to discuss entry to the Trois Etapes please don’t hesitate to Contact Us

Opportunities to sponsor

There are various sponsorship opportunities for both teams and the main event. A number of the sponsorship opportunities are completely unique in that sponsorship funds go directly to the charities. For further information, please contact Richard Gorman at Cosaveli.

Entry Fees

The entry fee is all-inclusive and covers everything from hotel, accommodation, flights from London, airport transfers, team support car, mechanics, food, pro rider, bike transport, team radios, race kit, physios etc. Team entries are £35,000 (Sterling) and cover all costs for 11 people

  • 7 amateur riders
  • 1 pro rider
  • 1 driver/DS
  • 1 charity representative
  • 1 team sponsor representative

Entry invoices are issued by Cosaveli Ltd, the event organisers, and are being issued under the European Tour Operators Margin Scheme so will not be subject to additional VAT charges. All fundraising income from the event passes directly to the charities involved rather than through Cosaveli Ltd.

The 2012 edition of the Trois Etapes was a truly unique and challenging event in world cycling. 10 teams competed over three consecutive days in Team Time Trial format, on three classic Tour de France Alpine climbs, for the honour of being crowned the Champions of the Trois Etapes and raised over $1.7m for charity in the process.

2012 Routes

The 2012 edition of the Trois Etapes was run over three days: Sunday July 29th to Tuesday July 31st 2012.

ETAPE 1: Orelle – Col de la Croix de Fer - Col du Glandon – Orelle

Leaving the event headquarters in Orelle, the Trois Etapes started with a mass peloton ride for 20km into the town of St Jean de Maurienne. This was followed by a mountain team time trial, with each team setting off at 30 second intervals, followed by their own support car. The timed GC section saw all teams compete for the fastest four riders to make the summit of the Col de la Croix de Fer. After regrouping at the summit, each team made its way across to the Col du Glandon and enjoyed a fabulous descent back down to the town of St Etienne des Cuines before returning up the valley to Orelle.

  • Col de la Croix de Fer – 2067m
  • Ascent – 1437m
  • Length of climb – 28km
  • Total Distance - 101km

ETAPE 2: Orelle – Col du Telegraphe – Col du Galibier – Alpe d'Huez

Teams left the event headquarters in Orelle individually in two minute intervals. A 7km, untimed section took each team to the town of St Michel de Maurienne where the timed 35km ascent of Col du Galibier started. This was raced in the standard team time trial format with the finishing line at the summit of the Col du Galibier. Each team then made their way to the rendez-vous at the base of Alpe d’Huez. A mass peloton start at the base of Alpe d’Huez ensured that riders wishing to post individual times can scale Alpe D’Huez at their chosen pace. Those riders wishing to soak in Carlos Sastre’s historic return to Alpe D’Huez may ride with him to his named turn for a commemorative photo with his plaque before scaling Alpe d’Huez with Carlos. All participants will be transported back to Orelle at the end of the stage.

  • Col du Telegraphe – 1566m
  • Ascent – 851m
  • Length of climb – 11.8km
  • Col du Galibier – 2642m
  • Ascent – 1241
  • Length of climb - 18km
  • Alpe d’Huez – 1845m
  • Ascent – 1130m
  • Length of climb - 13.8km
  • Total Distance - 101km

ETAPE 3: Orelle – Col de la Madeleine – St Francois Longchamps

Teams left the event headquarters at Orelle in two minute intervals. The stage started with a 30km untimed flat section before attacking the timed GC section of the Col de la Madeleine from La Chambre to the summit for the race’s final finish. All riders finished with a final roll down the mountain to La Parelle in St Francois Longchamps for champagne, prize-giving and lunch

  • Col de la Madeleine – 1993m
  • Ascent – 1522m
  • Length of climb – 19.05km
  • Total Distance - 50km
